The Umbrella Guy came about in 2007 when Ron Hearnden, in Guelph, Ontario, was asked by a funeral director friend to find something unique that could be used as a tasteful promotional item. Previously he had used clothing as a donation to local service clubs and community organizations for their fundraising efforts.
We had just established a relationship with a major private brand golf supplier who had an umbrella available in corporate black. This umbrella could be screen-printed with our friend’s logo in reasonable minimums (12) at the relatively low cost of $2.50 a unit.
We have supplied clients from Cornerbrook, Newfoundland
to Comox, British Columbia.
From this we were referred to other funeral directors, housing developers, pharmacies and car repair garages who have started using the customized umbrellas not only as a courtesy for their clients but for promotional purposes at fundraisers, company sales meetings, corporate golf tournaments, company picnics and the like.
The company name came from a funeral director in London, Ontario who upon a callback, greeted me with "Oh yes, you’re the umbrella guy”. Seemed like a good identifier to me.
